The Metra Board of Directors today approved an $8.1 million contract to construct a pedestrian underpass and related improvements at the Lombard Station along the UP West Line.

The contract was awarded to John Burns Construction Co. of Orland Park, which has committed to a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) goal of 15 percent. The work will include a new pedestrian tunnel, retaining walls, ADA ramps, stairways, platform shelters, canopies over both inbound and outbound platforms, landscaping, and other ancillary items for the station.

The $8.1 million contract will be funded from a variety of sources:

  • Metra: $3.7 million.
  • Union Pacific Railroad: $3.3 million.
  • Illinois Commerce Commission: $750,000.
  • Village of Lombard $300,000 (for architectural enhancements to the tunnel, including lighting and floor, wall and ceiling finishes).

Under a separate but simultaneous project, Burns and Union Pacific Railroad will rehabilitate the platforms at Lombard, at an estimated cost of $1.6 million.

The work is expected to begin this spring and take about 10 months. The station will remain open during construction, and all work will be staged to minimize the disruption to riders. About 1,300 riders use the Lombard Station each weekday.
