The second annual NASCAR Chicago Street Race is coming to Chicago’s Grant Park July 6 & 7. Time to sit back and leave the driving to the pros and avoid the hassle of detours and parking restrictions by taking Metra to the races.
Metra is one of your most inexpensive and safest ways to travel to and from NASCAR events, with expanded schedules on three of its lines on race days.
On Saturday, July 6, and Sunday, July 7, extra trains will operate on the Rock Island Line to Joliet as well as the Union Pacific North Line to Kenosha and Union Pacific West Line to Elburn, with one additional inbound and one additional outbound train added to each line’s schedule.
Regularly scheduled weekend service will be provided on the BNSF Line to Aurora, the Milwaukee District North and West lines, the Union Pacific Northwest Line, and the Metra Electric Line. BNSF recently expanded its weekend service, offerings adding six trains to the Saturday schedule and 16 trains on Sunday. The North Central Service, SouthWest Service, and Heritage Corridor lines do not operate on weekends.
Riders coming downtown through Chicago Union Station on Saturday, July 6, are also encouraged to pay a visit to Metra’s Museum Car, which will be on display at the station from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Metra’s Saturday or Sunday Day and Weekend passes offer values that can’t be beat. Our $7 Saturday or Sunday Day Passes allow for unlimited travel on either day. Our $10 Weekend Pass (available only through the Ventra App) allows for unlimited travel on both days. To make it an even better deal, either pass can be used in conjunction with Metra’s Family Fares, which allow up to three children 11 and under to ride for free with a fare-paying adult.
Metra recommends that riders use the Ventra app, available for free from the App Store or Google Play, to purchase tickets quickly and easily.
Alcohol will be banned on all Metra trains on Saturday and Sunday, and if trains are crowded, bicycles may not be allowed onboard. Customers should also expect slower boarding at stations due to increased passenger loads and train crews taking extra time to ensure everyone’s safety.
