The driver of a SUV involved in a collision with a train on the Metra Electric Line in South Chicago early Wednesday morning, Feb.12, has been charged with reckless homicide and DUI.
Moises Perez, 19, of Chicago, was charged with one count of reckless homicide, two counts of aggravated DUI causing death, four counts of aggravated DUI causing great bodily harm, two counts of aggravated for driving without a license and disobeying a railroad crossing.
One passenger in the car driven by Perez was killed in the crash at the 87th Street crossing on the Metra Electric Line’s South Chicago Branch Line around 12:30 a.m. Feb. 12. Elissa J Hernandez, 19, of Chicago,was pronounced dead at the scene and three others, including the driver, were transported to local hospitals where the two other passengers remain hospitalized with critical injuries.
The investigation determined that the crossing gates were functioning at the time of the incident and the driver disregarded the gates and lights and proceeded eastbound through the crossing where they were struck by a northbound train.
Perez was arraigned in Cook County Circuit Court and was ordered detained without bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 5.
